Moving Events Off CampusAn Appeal to NYU Faculty: Support GSOC By Moving Events Off-Campus As you know, NYU is refusing to negotiate in good faith with our union. The membership of GSOC/UAW-Local 2110 is determined to win a fair contract from the administration. In an effort to escalate our campaign and avert a strike, we have begun to ask organizers of events, conferences and symposia this fall to move these events off campus or postpone them until NYU agrees to bargain. Our aim with this campaign is not to disrupt the educational mission of schools and departments, but rather to demonstrate the breadth of support for our union among NYU faculty and visitors to the campus. We will work with you to find alternative space, and to minimize inconvenience. We have had success securing spaces ranging from small conference rooms to large auditoriums and theatres with AV technology, and will attempt to accommodate your specific needs.Last year, adjunct faculty at the New School (UAW Local 7902) used a similar approach to great effect to persuade their administration to come to the bargaining table without a strike. We have already had success on this campus. This month, three presidents - Lula da Silva of Brazil, Luis Rodriguez Zapatero of Spain and Nestor Kirchner of Argentina - cancelled a long-scheduled joint appearance at the King Juan Carlos Center. NYU claims the cancellation was due to scheduling conflicts, but it was announced immediately after the UAW and the AFL-CIO reached out to all three, asking them not to attend events on campus until NYU agrees to bargain in good faith.Although not every event is "high profile," we appreciate your efforts to move even smaller departmental events when possible. In the event that we are forced to strike in order to bring NYU to the negotiating table, we will ask that NYU faculty, staff and students honor out picket line, by moving all NYU classes and events off-campus.We will continue to draw on the resources of the UAW and AFL-CIO to reach invited guests who are difficult for GSOC members or NYU faculty to contact directly. However, to make this campaign as effective as possible, we ask your help in identifying events appropriate for relocation and explaining to all invited guests why they are being asked not to make appearances at NYU. Let us know if you are organizing an event so that we can find an alternative venue. We are setting up a working group to coordinate this aspect of our campaign for a second contract, and invite any interested faculty member to join union representatives in the group. Please contact us at 212.387.0220 or gsoc@2110uaw.org if you are willing to help. Click here to fill out an Event Relocation Form.We realize that moving events may cause inconvenience and even require sacrifice, but we need to show NYU that there will be no business as usual as long as they refuse to bargain in good faith with our union. The events and speakers that you bring to the campus enhance the university's reputation. Re-locating these to off campus venues sends a strong message to the administration and the public that NYU's refusal to bargain in good faith does not have the support of the university community.Thank you for supporting our union, and we appreciate your help in this effort to bring NYU to the bargaining table. On behalf of GSOC/UAW Local 2110,Michael Palm, GSOC Chair
